RICHMOND, VA – Del. Lacey Putney (I-Bedford) learned that 51 years in the Virginia House don’t mean a whole lot when you propose a 25% increase in the Commonwealth’s sales tax. Putney, chairman of the House Appropriations Committee and the longest serving Delegate in Virginia’s history, proposed increasing the sales tax to 5% and dedicating half of the proceeds to to transportation infrastructure.
Putney’s bill (HB-1239) was tabled on a straight party-line vote. Putney argued that the measure, which would have added approximately $1 billion per year to the state’s coffers, was necessary to repair Virginia’s roads. Putney cited the fact that the roads in his western Virginia district were “very, very unsafe”.
