avatar (noun)

A vuh tahr

the embodiment on earth of a god, ideal, quality or concept

Flush with celebrity as London’s leading “aesthete,” Wilde arrived in New York in January of 1882 for a triumphal tour of the United States; he is said to have announced to Customs officials, “I have nothing to declare except my genius.” Thus genius became not merely a synonym for exalted intellectual power but a performed role. With his ostentatious clothing, his green carnations, his witty epigrams, and his flair for publicity, Wilde became the avatar of self-proclaimed genius.
