INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Since 1977 Richard Lugar has represented Indiana in the U.S. Senate. When the Senate begins a new session in January, 2013 Indiana will have a new Senator. Lugar lost to Indiana state treasurer Richard Murdock in yesterday’s GOP primary.
With a lifetime American Conservative Union (ACU) rating of 77, Lugar’s opponents portrayed Lugar as too moderate. Murdock was supported by movement conservatives and the Tea Party movement.
Unlike some Republican moderates who lost primaries in recent years, the 80 year old Lugar conceded and vowed to support Murdock against Democrat Joe Donnelly. Lugar said that he wanted to see a Republican in White House and Murdock in the Senate.
