Protest … Ad Absurdum

Today mourners prepare for the funeral of slain NYPD officer Rafel Ramos (the funeral for officer Wen Jian Liu will be later).  New York mayor Bill DeBlasio has asked that “peaceful protest” against the police be postponed until after the funerals.  Some protesters have shown restraint, others continue to verbally attack the police.

We all have a right to engage in non-violent protest.  This right is guaranteed by the First Amendment.  The problem is that many of these “protesters” are not engaging in peaceful protest, contrary to assertions made by Mayor DeBlasio.  The New Criterion’s James Pierson highlights some of the recent incidents:

On the evening of December 13, several hundred supporters of the movement marched across the Brooklyn Bridge toward Manhattan for the purpose of staging protests at City Hall and other locations in the City.  During that march across the walkway of the Bridge, one protestor picked up a garbage can and tried to throw it out on to the adjacent roadway and into the path of automobile traffic.  Two police officers intervened to stop the man and to place him under arrest.  At this moment, at least six other protestors came to the aid of their comrade, knocking the officers to the ground and then kicking and slugging them into submission. One officer suffered a broken nose in the melee. The assailants escaped into the night, but not before several witnesses used smart phones to film the attack.  Police also recovered the backpack of the man who started the incident by trying to throw the garbage can on to the roadway.

“What do we want? Dead cops! When do we want it? Now.”

This is not peaceful.  This is not non-violent.  While not as egregious as recent events in Missouri, this does not further the cause of those who want to see an end to needless death at the hands of our police. (While rare, this does occur.)  This certainly does not aid in improving race relations in this country.  Improvement occurred in the 1960’s because white Americans were horrified to see peaceful protesters viciously attacked.  Then came the era of the “Race Pimp”.  Where Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, John Lewis, and countless others were heroes to a movement, we now see hustlers attempt to portray criminals like Michael Brown as “innocent victims”.  In some  (rare) instances they may be victims.  They are not innocent.  In some (rare) instances police are racist thugs; but those instances are rare.

Our police deserve better.  We deserve better.  The African-American community deserves better.  As long as the Al Sharpton’s of the world attempt to control the narrative (and the black community allows them to) real injustice will not receive the attention it deserves.

Anything Goes in Leftist Politics

Saturday’s runoff in Louisiana is over.  Mary Landrieu is enjoying her last few days as an elected official.  Republicans will enjoy an eight seat majority come January.  What’s to worry?

While Louisiana has earned a reputation for lawlessness in its politics, some tactics used in Landrieu’s vain struggle to remain in the U.S. Senate should remain in voters’ (and conservatives’) minds long after Bill Cassidy is sworn in to replace that vestige of crooked cronyism – Mary Landrieu.

“Vote early.  Vote often.” It’s a joke oft-told about politicians.  Is it really a joke?

Thanks to the Black Conservatives Fund, we now know as fact something that many have simply feared:  Democrat politicians encourage [some] voters to vote more than once.

In this case Opelousas, LA mayor Don Cravins, Sr. encourages a group of predominately African-American voters to “Vote Again”.  Mayor Cravins just happens to be the father of Landrieu’s chief-of-staff.  As Louisiana Sen. Elbert Guillory notes in the video, the only think preventing mass voter fraud of the type encouraged by Cravins is voter ID requirements (which Louisiana thankfully has), and a Republican administration in Baton Rouge.

Twiddlin’ Thumbs on Taxpayers’ Dime

WASHINGTON, DC – You’ve heard of New York City’s infamous “Rubber Rooms” where teachers are paid for years to sit around and do nothing.  The federal government has a similar deal.

An Inspector General’s report details how the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) pays employees on “paid administrative leave”.  The EPA payments are costing taxpayers over $1 million per year.  A report by by the General Accountability Office (GAO) estimates that paid administrative leave cost federal taxpayers $3.1 billion between 2011 and 2013.

Where Were You in ‘68?

Windows smashed.  Buildings ablaze, lighting up the night sky.  “Civil Rights Activists” ginning up the mob.  Ferguson, Missouri in 2014.

What’s the net result?  For starters, black and immigrant owned businesses are gone.  Families, most likely African-American, are homeless.  The only winners are the race pimps, the agitators, and the mainstream media – whose ratings go up as we sit in front of our LCD screens and watch as “those people”, hundreds (or thousands) of miles away destroy a small city.

In 1968 I was a young kid living just across the Baltimore City line.  My father worked downtown at the old Fish Market (now Port Discovery).  Here is one of my memories:

What’s the biggest difference?  One photo is color and the other is black and white.

Businesses and homes were burned.  People lost their jobs.  People had no home to return to after the tumult.

Have injustices been addressed?  Yes.  Does more need to be done?  Yes.  However, I would argue that the non-violent actions of people like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Ralph Abernathy, Medgar Evers, and countless others did more to bring that about than any action by the likes of Rap Brown, Jesse Jackson, or Al Sharpton.  They also managed to encourage progress rather than destroy the lives of their fellow African-Americans.

Today we have the likes of Attorney General Eric Holder stating that he “doesn’t condone the violence”.  Missouri governor Jay Nixon refused to send in the National Guard until after a full night of burning and looting.  Back then Baltimore mayor Thomas L. J. D’Alesandro, III refused to ask Maryland governor Spiro Agnew to send in the National Guard until a great deal of damage had already been done and the riot had gotten out of hand.  At least Agnew, considered a moderate, “Rockefeller” Republican at the time, took a stand and demanded that the self-identified “leaders” of the African-American community lead and denounce the violence.  Most did not out of fear of reprisals from the more radical elements inciting the riots.

Former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani last week demanded that our nation’s leaders denounce the violence in Ferguson.  Where are our elected officials?  Are they too afraid of the Al Sharptons of the world and how they will be portrayed on MSNBC?

Illiterate? Cry Racism!

This week former Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour was caught up in an uproar because his critics were too illiterate to understand comments Barbour made on a conference call.  Barbour’s offense?  He referred to President Obama’s policies as “tar babies”.

The liberal media is outraged.  Barbour is a racist.  His lobbying clients should be ashamed.  Really?

What is a “tar baby”.  The dictionary defines it as a “sticky situation”.  The term comes from the “Uncle Remus” stories published in the 19th century.  Br’er Rabbit punches a tar baby (a doll made of tar and turpentine) and becomes stuck.  The “Uncle Remus” stories have their roots in West African folklore transported to America by slaves.  Joel Chandler Harris (and others) published the stories in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  Like “Aesop’s Fables”, the stories are designed to impart wisdom, particularly to children.

Barbour’s critics are either illiterate, or simply attempting to score political points by playing the race card.  Neither should be acceptable in this day.

Mary Landrieu – From Bad to Worse

Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) faces an uphill battle to retain her seat.  Her response?  Landrieu is attacking her opponent, Rep. Bill Cassidy (R-LA).  Here is an ad Landrieu’s campaign released Saturday:

According to Democrats, and the mainstream media, it is Republicans (particularly conservative Republicans) who resort to such tactics.  Yet, Landrieu’s ad is void of a single issue.  When the Washington Post agrees that a Democrat ad has gone too far, that’s saying something!

Yet, what can the Louisiana (or national) voter expect?  Sure, Republicans go negative … even nasty.  It’s just that they aren’t so sanctimonious about it.

If you want to see Cassidy’s actual speech, in context – click here.  But as the WaPo’s Chris Cillizza states:

It’s not clear, though, how many people who see the Landrieu ad will, like me, find and then watch the whole nine-minute Cassidy speech. The Landrieu people are hoping not many.

Expect more nastiness from the same candidate (Landrieu) who not so subtly implied that Louisianans who voted for Cassidy were racists and sexists.

MSNBC – Don’t Let the Facts Get In the Way of the Narrative

Even the left acknowledges that MSNBC has a “progressive” slant.  To add to the irony, NBC now views MSNBC as an adjunct to its news department.  MSNBC talking heads such as Rachel Maddow make FOX News regulars such as Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity look positively moderate in comparison.

While I am a fan of neither O’Reilly nor Hannity, they at least attempt to use facts to support their arguments rather than simply make them up as they go along.  Not so with the MSNBC cabal.

A recent case on point, with a Delmarva slant, is MSNBC’s Chris Hayes:

The man standing before the microphone in his white lab coat is Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD).  Hayes identifies Harris as Rep. Tom Price (R-GA).  He claims that Harris / Price hasn’t practiced medicine since 1996.  Well, that’s not true of the man in the video.  Harris practiced medicine right up until his election to Congress in 2010.  While I can’t speak for Andy, I’m willing to bet that he would still be practicing medicine today if not for a federal law which prohibits members to hold outside jobs.  This is the reason than many physicians serving in Congress no longer practice.

Of course, none of this matters.  Facts don’t matter.  It’s the NARRATIVE that matters.

Obama’s Lack of Understanding

WASHINGTON, DC – While people were literally dying in southeast DC yesterday, President Barack Obama launched a partisan attack against Congressional Republicans.  Even media outlets such as MSNBC – the OFFICIAL Obama network – is outraged.

From FOXNews:

More than three hours after news broke of the Navy Yard shootings, President Obama opted to proceed with a partisan attack on Republicans over a looming budget impasse. Obama asked if the GOP was really “willing to hurt people” while police were still searching for suspects in the killings. Obama also touted his own re-election win, slamming Republican nominee Mitt Romney’s ineffective opposition to Obama’s 2010 health law. All the networks, including MSNBC, eventually abandoned coverage of the president’s remarks and returned to breaking news from the scene.

Chief White House Correspondent Ed Henry asked White House Press Secretary Jay Carney why the president went ahead with “what became a series of attacks on Republicans.” Carney responded saying the president’s comments were “entirely appropriate.”

Is the President and his staff so tone deaf that they can’t understand there are certain lines you don’t cross?  Can you imagine the reaction if a Republican occupied the White House and did the same thing?

The EPA Brigade

CHICKEN, AK – I remember watching a 1997 Steven Seagal movie, Fire Down Below, and thinking what a stupid premise the movie was based on.  Sure it was decent low brow entertainment and I loved some of the actors – Marg Helgenberger, Kris Kristofferson, Levon Helm – and the country singers that also appeared – Marty Stuart, Randy Travis, Travis Tritt – but c’mon … an EPA agent wages war against an evil corporation and the town it controls.  Boy, was I wrong!

Last week armed EPA agents raided the thriving metropolis of Chicken, Alaska.  The EPA Brigade showed up in full body armor looking for violations of the Clean Water Act.

The next time I need to call 911 for the police I’ll tell them that someone is polluting rather than robbing my house.  Maybe the eco-army will respond faster.

ObamaCare Hits Trader Joe’s

MONROVIA, CA – Everyone seems to love Trader Joe’s.  Since we don’t have one on Delmarva, my wife fills the car up every two weeks when she’s down in Virginia visiting her parents.  The grocery chain appears to be one of America’s many success stories … at least until ObamaCare reared its ugly head.  Last week the chain informed employees that Trader Joe’s would no longer be offering health care benefits to its part time employees.

What was supposed to be the answer to a supposed health care crisis, ObamaCare seems to be the opposite.  According to the Congressional Budget Office, over 7 million workers will lose their employer-based health coverage as a result of the law.  These individuals (and their covered family members) will be forced into government-run exchanges.

You Can’t Manage An Economy

WASHINGTON, DC – Big Labor, a leading backer of the Barack Obama administration and the Democrat party, is finally starting to learn that the government cannon manage an economy.  Their lesson?  ObamaCare’s 40% tax on “cadillac” health insurance plans.

Last week, just prior to the Labor Day holiday, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) announced that they would be ending their affiliation with the AFL-CIO over the union umbrella’s support of ObamaCare and the tax on “cadillac plans”.  Other labor unions are denouncing the law as they learn that their members will be adversely affected by ObamaCare.  The Democrat promise that all Americans could keep their existing plans if they wanted has rung hollow.

While more  employers across the country are cutting worker hours below the 30 hour “full time” threshold for ObamaCare, others are abandoning their traditional health plans in favor of high deductible Health Savings Account plans (HSA’s).  Ironically, it was the left that attacked these plans during the first decade of the 21st century.

HSA’s are cheaper, in part, because employees have greater control over their health care spending:

John Goodman, a longtime proponent, is sometimes called the father of health savings accounts. He explains that with such accounts "the employee controls a lot of the money, makes a lot of his own decisions."

He says that saves money because, as he puts it, "we’re always more careful when we’re spending our own money than when we’re spending someone else’s money."

Increased regulation and higher taxes distort the market for health care, which encompasses 17% of our nation’s economy.  Big Labor, and other traditional Democrat allies may finally be learning that Washington’s “Brain Trust” simply cannot manage such a large portion of the world’s largest economy.  Despite continual attack from government, the “invisible hand” of the free market always comes out on top.  Unfortunately, the distorting effects of government, labor unions, and corporatist business interests do impact the free market; yielding results that few proponents can anticipate.

Obama Fiddles …

Declare war.  … Play golf.  That was the sequence of events yesterday as President Barack Obama announced that he would be taking military action against Syria.

According to Obama:

This attack is an assault on human dignity. It also presents a serious danger to our national security. It risks making a mockery of the global prohibition on the use of chemical weapons. It endangers our friends and our partners along Syria’s borders, including Israel, Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon and Iraq. It could lead to escalating use of chemical weapons, or their proliferation to terrorist groups who would do our people harm.

While Obama also claims that Syria’s actions are a threat to our national security, he also claims that action isn’t time sensitive.  A tad counterintuitive, but he was elected president.

The most disturbing part of this little political drama is Obama’s cavalier attitude towards Congress.  He believes that he doesn’t need Congressional approval to take military action against Syria.  He and his administration have said so.  He may be right – if you believe that the War Powers Act is constitutional.  However, can Obama now claim unilateral authority AFTER he admits that taking action is not time sensitive?  It seems pretty clear that he now will seek Congressional approval to cover his political backside.

Obama, like almost all politicians, is at least as concerned about appearances as he is about substance (yes, I am feeling particularly charitable today).  Therefore, isn’t it better (for appearance’s sake if nothing else) to cancel a round of golf when you are telling the nation that you are putting our nation and our allies at risk?

Obama prefers to putt while the world burns.

3/4 of Americans Are Racists?

WASHINGTON, DC – Are 3/4 of Americans really racists?  That’s a tough a pretty tough feat given that non-Hispanic whites make up just over 60% of the US population; yet the left does seem to believe this.  Why?  A recent Washington Post poll shows that 74% of Americans support photo ID to vote.  According to such conservative stalwarts as Barack Obama and Eric Holder, requiring a photo ID is a blatant attempt to suppress minority voter turnout … de facto racism.

I guess Congress will have to appropriate money for mandatory “sensitivity training”.

Read My Lips … Repeal ObamaCare

Red State’s Erick Erickson is one of the few conservative commentators to actually understand what is happening in the Republican Party vis a vis Repealing / Defunding / ??? ObamaCare.  The party’s leadership has never cared about ObamaCare.  They wouldn’t support it, not because it is bad public policy, but because they knew it would cost them votes.  Remember, these same people had no problem supporting another massive entitlement – Medicare Part D.

A moderate, by definition, is one who believes in nothing.  Unfortunately the Mitch McConnell, John Boehner, Eric Cantor, et al are moderates.  The believe in nothing other than increasing their own political power.  We have symbolic votes to repeal ObamaCare because these people know that nothing will come of it.  They threaten to not increase the debt ceiling because they know it will have to be raised.  When they back down they tell us that the real fight will come at budget time.  Budget time has come.  There will be no budget and they now tell us that they have to pass a continuing resolution … without a defunding of ObamaCare.  The upcoming debt ceiling increase is where we need to tackle ObamaCare.  The GOP leadership not only doesn’t mind lying to us, they also believe that we are too stupid to remember what they told us less than a year before.

Erickson has hit the nail on the head.  The current intra-party fight over defunding ObamaCare is the “Read My Lips” moment for GOP moderates.  Perhaps the Boehner / Cantor / McConnell posse should make a pilgrimage to Houston and ask George H. W. Bush how it all worked out for him.  It made Bill Clinton president.

All of this doesn’t mean that conservatives should think that the battle is over and that we will regain control of the GOP.  It doesn’t.  Staying home will only give the Democrats a win.  We must work to ELECT conservatives.  Sadly, too many of us have become such ideologues that we will not support candidates unless we are in 100% agreement.  While moderates and conservatives all try to claim the mantle of Ronald Reagan, they refuse to follow the wisdom which he left us.

Obama’s War on Innovative Education

Last week, President Barack Obama was telling students that he wanted to change federal student aid to reward schools that were providing a “cost effective” education.  Sounds great, right?

At the same time the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the accrediting body for over 1,000 colleges in 19 states, was pulling the plug on Ivy Bridge College, a partnership between Tiffin University and the for-profit Altius Education.  Ivy Bridge College’s mission was to provide a cost-effective two year program that successfully funneled students into completing their four year degrees.

The Obama administration argues that the federal government must focus on rewarding schools which are cost effective.  In theory, this is a sound idea.  Unfortunately, neither Obama nor people of his ideological persuasion are able to grasp a few basic truths:

  1. The liberal policy of throwing money (in the form of grants and federally subsidized loans) is a primary culprit in price inflation of a college education far outpacing the price inflation of the economy in general.
  2. “For-Profit” is not synonymous with “bad”, “evil”, or “poor quality”.
  3. A government cannot centrally plan an economy, or a large portion of it, with same efficiency and quality as a free market.
Like the mortgage crisis, the “crisis” of inflation in higher education is a product of government action.  Monetary inflation is the effect of too much money chasing a limited supply of goods.  Easy money (in the form of poor quality, government subsidized mortgages) chasing a limited amount of real estate precipitated the real estate “bubble”.  Inflation in higher education is the effect of too much money (in the form of grants and subsidized loans) chasing a limited number of seats in our colleges and universities.

Obama and his ideological acolytes first tried to tell us that it was “for profit” education that was the culprit (just has the evil banks were the culprits in the mortgage crisis).  Then we were told that private sector participation in providing student loans was costing taxpayers and students.  While the Obama administration has nearly destroyed for-profit higher education and has ended private sector student lending, the costs of a four year college education continue to rise far faster than the cost of living.

Has all of this extra funding gone to providing a higher quality of education?  No.  Today’s colleges and universities are investing in such educational necessities as rock climbing walls, fancy dining facilities and a Starbucks in almost every building.  This flood of money yields an increased competition for customers students.  A better library, smaller classes, or a better teaching just can’t compete against saunas and caffeine.

Innovation in higher education, just like the innovation brought by school choice in primary and secondary education can’t be permitted.  Free market solutions simply cannot be allowed.  We can continue to expect declining public schools and college graduates drowning in debt … and liberal politicians continuing to claim that the solution is throwing your tax dollars at the problem.

Why You Can’t Trust the GOP Leadership

Red State’s Erick Erickson has a great synopsis of the ridiculous contortions the GOP’s congressional leadership has gone through over ObamaCare.  Before you call your Representative or Senator in response to some #dontfundobamacare tweet, you need to read it.

In our view the bottom line is pretty simple.  Using the debt ceiling as a political tool is irresponsible.  It was irresponsible last year and will always be so.  HOWEVER, using the appropriations process and / or continuing resolutions to block funding for ObamaCare (and a myriad of other wasteful spending programs) is responsible … and NECESSARY.

Any Republican who refuses to support a continuing resolution that excludes funding for ObamaCare isn’t deserving of your vote next year.  If GOP members of Congress can’t take a stand on this, then when will they take a stand on anything substantive?

If the government has to shut down, so be it.  The media tells us that Republicans lost big in 1996 over a shut down.  Of course, the facts say otherwise.  The GOP lost a handful of House seats, but picked up two Senate seats.  As for the presidency, the GOP lost by running a moderate against a perceived moderate Democrat that was universally loved by the media.  Sound familiar?

We can make a difference.  Demand that your members of Congress be responsible.  Demand that they use their constitutionally given appropriations power to stop ObamaCare.  Demand that they TAKE A STAND!  Don’t allow them to wiggle out of doing their duty.  Ignore the John Boehners, Eric Cantors, and Mitch McConnells of this world.  Follow the advice of Nancy Reagan and JUST SAY NO!

Was Slavery Wrong?

Not According to Obama Education Policy

Imagine a social studies  or history class in public school.  The discussion for today is slavery –

Johnny:  I think it was wrong to free the slaves.  Every white person should own at least one.

Teacher:  OK Johnny.  Can you please explain how you came to that conclusion?

Johnny:  Sure.  Look back at how things were when we had slavery.  Life was easier for people like me (we can assume Johnny is white).  We didn’t have the crime problems that we have now.  My dad is always complaining about high taxes.  If we still had slavery, we wouldn’t have to pay taxes for things like food stamps and welfare.

Teacher:  Very well reasoned Johnny.  I believe that you’re wrong, but I can certainly understand how you came to that answer.

Sound ridiculous?  Of course it is.  There’s just one problem.  With the Obama administration’s “Common Core” education initiative you can expect your children (if they are in public schools) to be taught this way.  Watch the video below:

4 x 3 = 11 in the world of “Common Core”

Mathematics is a priori knowledge.  It can be proven rationally, with no need for empirical evidence.  If little Johnny can get away with 3 x 4 = 11, then there is no possible argument that little Johnny can’t also hold a supposedly informed opinion that slavery was good, that the Holocaust  never occurred, women should not have the right to vote, or that Jim Crow had a net positive social impact.

We should be careful what we wish for … unless that wish is for Idiocracy.

Why Is IRS Going After Job Creators?

WASHINGTON, DC – While President Barack Obama and members of Congress from both parties claim that job creation is a national priority, the federal government is making life more difficult for the nation’s job creation engine – small business.  According to CNN, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is targeting small businesses that generate a disproportionate amount of revenue paid for by credit cards.

The IRS claims to be using “industry data” to determine who to target.  There are just a few problems with this notion.  Such data is always historical and doesn’t reflect the rapid technological and demographic changes our economy is going through.  The hot dog stand operator of ten years ago never even thought about accepting credit cards.  How could he (or she)?  Today that same business owner simply pops a small (and amazingly affordable) device like the Square or Intuit’s GoPayment into their smart phone and VOILA – customers can now pay with a credit or debit card!

Twenty years ago, selling your wares via the internet were the province of larger businesses who could afford to invest in the programming and infrastructure to put together an online store.  Today, millions of small businesses sell products and services online.  They receive their payments via services like PayPal or … credit card.

Let’s not forget the demographic changes we have experienced at an accelerated pace.  Today, fewer and fewer consumers carry cash.  It is assumed that they can pay for every product and service they will ever need via credit card, debit card, or online debit from their bank accounts.  Talk to a college student or a recent graduate – most have never written a check!  Cash?  Forget it!  In case you haven’t noticed, you don’t even need cash to buy a Coke from a vending machine anymore.

Why worry if you’re not cheating on your taxes?  If you have to ask, you obviously have never owned a business.  Time spent responding to the IRS is time that could be spent building your business.  Money spent on CPA’s is money that be spent building your business.  That means CREATING JOBS!

Most of us will acknowledge that the IRS has a job to do.  However, we should hope that our Federal government would be more judicious in using its power; particularly as it impacts the growth of our fragile national, state, and local economies.

For attorneys, burying the dead seems to come a distant second after filing lawsuits.

Why Do YOU Pay Rent to Joe Biden?

GREENVILLE, DE – Last year YOU paid $26,400 in rent to Vice President Joe Biden.  Why?

It seems that the U.S. Secret Service uses a cottage on the grounds of Biden’s estate outside Wilmington.  This property is used as part of Biden’s protection detail but Biden charges the taxpayers $2,200 per month!

Typical of most high-profile liberals, Biden and his wife donated less than two percent of their adjusted gross income to charity in 2012.

Liberal Group Suspected in Bugging of GOP Senate Leader’s Office

LOUISVILLE, KY – Progress Kentucky, a liberal group with a history of attacking Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), has emerged as a suspect in the bugging of McConnell’s DC office.

What Happened to Free Markets?

One of the assumptions of a free market is that all parties have equal access to all available information.  This is why things like “insider trading” are illegal.  We acknowledge that we do not live in a Pollyanna world of perfect competition and perfect information.  That said, we thought that the government was supposed to protect consumers from market manipulation.

It appears that this is not the case.  Any viewer of CNBC or Fox Business know that the release of minutes of the Federal Reserve’s Open Market Committee (FOMC) or of a Board of Governors’ meeting can, and do, move markets.  Why then did copies of the minutes of the March Fed meeting go out a day early to several banks, at least one hedge fund, a law firm, and several Congressional staffer?

Senate Office Bugged by Left

WASHINGTON, DC – For those that believe only Republicans would engage in things such as illegal wire-tapping, fear not.  It appears that the left doesn’t bother with legal niceties when it suits their purposes either.

Mother Jones has published an article based, in part, on illegal recordings made of Sen. Mitch McConnell discussing the possibility of a challenge from actress Ashley Judd.

While Judd has announced that she will not run in 2014, her response to the illegal act sounded and awful lot like a candidate:  “This is yet another example of the politics of personal destruction that embody Mitch McConnell and are pervasive in Washington, D.C.”

The mainstream media’s response seems to be more concern about McConnell “digging up dirt” on Judd rather than the fact that an illegal act had taken place.  We can only assume that ABC News has never heard of opposition research.

Could Salisbury Use an “Extreme Makeover” Downtown?

It’s been tried in San Antonio.  This weekend it will be tried in Norfolk.  Perhaps Salisbury could benefit from a quick and dirty “Extreme Makeover”?

This weekend a group of volunteers and the urban planning firm Team Better Block will unveil a temporary “makeover” of a neglected section of Granby Street (once Norfolk’s vibrant main thoroughfare).  The key word in this is “temporary”.

Why would a municipality spend thousands of dollars to temporarily fix-up a section of town?  It gives people a chance to not only visualize, but actually experience, a re-vitalization plan.  Rather than spend hundreds of thousands, or millions, of dollars on a plan that may be good … or bad, Team Better Block’s approach is simple:

  • Do Something
  • Do it CHEAPLY
  • Do it QUICKLY

People get to see the potential of an area.  Potential developers / investors can be attracted.  Bureaucracy is curtailed.  The advantages are almost endless.

FDR’s Grandson Working on Energy Independence … With Oil

Elliott Roosevelt, grandson of Democrat icon Franklin Delano Roosevelt, is sitting on top of almost 2 BILLION barrels of oil.  By injecting carbon dioxide into the ground he, and independent experts, expects to release 400 – 600 million barrels of that oil.  Of course, that’s assuming that the Obama administration doesn’t throw up additional roadblocks.

While the Obama administration has all but stopped new drilling on public lands, energy exploration on private lands has grown and yielded results.  North Dakota has the lowest unemployment rate in the nation thanks to “fracking” for natural gas.  The method being used by Roosevelt has the potential to bring another 3 – 4 million barrels per day to market.

The Observer – The Truth About Austerity … Everywhere But the U. S.

It seems that simple, basic economic truth is coming home to roost in the European socialist utopia.  It’s already occurred in Canada.  Why can’t our own politicians grasp the obvious?

In a study released Friday at the annual conference of the Royal Economics Society, economists Luca Agnello and  Vitor Castro of Italy and Ricardo Sousa of Portugal tracked austerity programs from 1978 – 2009.  They found that the best programs shoot for the greatest deficit reductions in the 2nd and 3rd years of a program.  They also show empirical data that opposition mounts to austerity programs lasting more than nine years.

Yet, here in the United States, our politicians are unwilling to make real cuts to government spending or to reform entitlement spending.  Don’t expect too much media coverage of this study; it violates the current political narrative too much to receive serious consideration.  Among the common sense findings:

  • Reducing public spending lowered deficits more than raising taxes
  • Trading nations are usually more successful at restoring their public finances
  • Low interest rates and “sound macro-economic” conditions improve the odds of financial consolidations
  • Spending cuts are typically deepest in the second and third years of austerity programs before rising again in the final years

IMAGINE – Reducing Spending is MORE EFFECTIVE than Raising Taxes!  I wonder what Barack Obama’s reaction would be if he was actually made aware of this study?

Lord Keynes gets a bad rap these days.  If he had lived to see the mess that was made from his General Theory he would be ashamed to see what the term “Keynesian economics” has come to mean.  Rationalism reigns.  Liberal politicians and economists tell us that if you spend X the economy will improve.  After spending X, we don’t see the desired result.  What is the left’s answer?  We didn’t spend enough! (don’t worry, Paul Krugman didn’t receive his Nobel Prize for spouting this macroeconomic drivel)

Common sense has fallen to men and women who fancy themselves gods.  While this statement may seem extreme, it is fact.  Omniscience and omnipresence are required to “manage” a national economy.  That’s either Adam Smith’s “invisible hand” or a god.  Since most of these folks don’t believe in either Smith or God …

Fisker Heading Towards Bankruptcy?

Another beneficiary of millions in taxpayer subsidies appears headed for bankruptcy.  Fisker, the electric car company, has fired three quarters of its staff according to Wilmington’s News-Journal.

In 2009 Fisker received a $529 million Federal loan and $21 million in other incentives from the state of Delaware.  President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden heralded Fisker as a big part of the administration’s “Green Energy” initiative.

Can Romney Make It Over the Top?

Despite a lack of economic growth and continuing unemployment, President Barack Obama continues to run even with GOP nominee Mitt Romney in the polls.  Can Romney pull ahead and take the White House from the second coming of Jimmy Carter?  We hope so.  Deposing Barack Obama will certainly be better for the nation and our economy.  Will he?

It is almost certain that the race will be decided in a few key states:  Virginia, Ohio, and Florida to name a few.  Polling is expected to be tight.  Why then did the Romney campaign choose to throw away the potential support of libertarian leaning conservatives at the recent Republican National Convention?  By passing rules which are arrogant at best, despotic at worst, movement conservatives, Tea Partiers, and Paulistas are seriously questioning the wisdom of voting Romney / Ryan on November 6th.  Many of these same activists are just as, if not more, furious over the Romney campaign’s decision to strip legally elected Ron Paul delegates of their credentials to prevent Paul’s name from being placed in nomination.

In Delaware we could also see viable candidates like state senate candidate Ernest Lopez fall in a close race because of Romney’s actions (Lopez, like Romney, is viewed as an “establishment Republican”).  In Virginia, former governor and senator George Allen could pay the cost of Romney’s folly.  It is ironic that Dan Bongino could benefit from the active participation of disaffected conservatives in Maryland.  Unfortunately, Maryland is not likely to overthrow Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) any more than it is likely to give its 10 electoral votes to Mitt Romney.

If Romney loses any of these swing states by a few thousand votes, he can blame no one but himself.  Sending Ron Paul supporters to Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson or Constitution candidate Virgil Goode could cost Romney and this nation mightily.  Keeping them within the GOP fold would have cost his campaign nothing other than showing them the respect they are do.

Our view is simple – do what is best for the country and vote Mitt Romney.  In four years liberty loving conservatives can reevaluate.  Objectively there is no question – Mitt Romney would make a better president than Barack Obama.  Working hard for candidates, and letting them know that you are supporting them and NOT the GOP, is the best message you can send.  Merely sitting on your hands and hoping for what might have been is not serving your country; it simply helps extreme leftist Democrats to maintain effective control.

Obamacare … In One (Long) Sentence

Dr. Barbara Bellar is a candidate for the Illinois Senate.  She is also the author of the best definition of ObamaCare to date:

So, let me get this straight.  This is a long sentence.  We’re going to be gifted with a healthcare plan that we’re forced to purchase and fined if we don’t, which purportedly covers at least 10 million more people without adding a single doctor but provides for 16,000 new IRS agents, written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn’t understand it, passed by a Congress that didn’t read it but exempted themselves from it, and signed by a President who smokes — [laughter] — same sentence! — with funding administered by a Treasury chief who didn’t pay his taxes, for which we will be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect, by a government that has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, all to be overseen by a Surgeon General who is obese — [laughter] — and finally, financed by a country that’s broke.

How Will Dems Spin Their Convention?

CHARLOTTE, NC – As Democrats pray that the Romney-Ryan ticket will not benefit from a post-convention bounce, they have other problems facing them as they head to Charlotte.  As Gary Robertson reports for the AP:

Gay rights activists, for example, plan to protest for same-sex marriage in a state where North Carolina voters easily passed a constitutional amendment banning it. Members of another key Democratic group, organized labor, intend to picket, too, in part because union leaders are unhappy Democrats picked a state long viewed as hostile to them.

Even North Carolina Democrats have found the state to be cooler lately, with Republicans winning control of the state legislature in 2010 and considered favorites to capture the governor’s mansion this year.

And if Democrats were hoping that North Carolina would provide a narrative to support the president’s case that the economy is on the rebound, they must be disappointed.

The state has an unemployment rate of 9.6 percent — one of the highest in the country. The Charlotte metro rate is even higher at 10 percent, making it more difficult to portray the city of 750,000 as on the cusp of recovery after its once-soaring banking industry tumbled.

Will the “lamestream media” actually give Americans “the rest of the story”?  We’ll have to wait … and watch.

News-Post Calls O’Malley Out on Record and RNC Performance

FREDERICK, MD – Frederick’s News-Post doesn’t think much of Maryland governor Martin O’Malley’s recent performance in Tampa.  Kudos to one of the few print organs in the Once Free State that dares to say, “The Emperor has no clothes.”:

As outrageous as this was, it comes as little surprise in a political era when running the other guy or party down is the name of the game. Never mind trying to get the current national economic mess straightened out by — bite our tongue — actually working together for solutions.

Maryland Sen. E. J. Pipkin (R-36) hit the nail right on the head:

Gov. O’Malley crashing our convention is a waste of time. And he should not be talking about jobs after the dismal performance over the last few months." State House of Delegates Minority Leader Tony O’Donnell got even more personal, saying, "The country deserves to know what a fraud O’Malley is. We have a structural deficit of over $1 billion, we’re losing jobs at a higher rate than anyone else in the country and we have an underfunded pension system. There’s much to do in our state. The Democratic folks are very desperate to hold on to their national power.

Over the last few months O’Malley has proven what many of us already believed – his future political ambitions far outweigh the problems facing Maryland and our nation.  We almost feel guilty about our recent criticism of Salisbury mayor Jim Ireton.  While guilty of the same sins, what should we expect given the behavior of two of Ireton’s heroes – Barack Obama and Martin O’Malley?  We all learn from example.

Obama Documentary Scores Impressive Box Office Weekend

LOS ANGELES – Despite attacks from the mainstream media and flooding in large portions of the East Coast, the documentary 2016:  Obama’s America came out of nowhere to finish the weekend as the seventh best grossing movie.  Ironically, the movie beat out the Meryl Streep’s latest movie, with the Obamaesque title of Hope Springs.

It’s Maryland vs. the World in Race for Same-Sex Marriage Bucks

NEW YORK – As Marylanders were gathering signatures to force the state’s recently enacted gay marriage law onto November’s ballot, the mainstream media and the leftist blogosphere wanted us to believe that anti-gay groups from outside the state were running the show.  Unlike the left, however, pro-family Marylanders didn’t have to pay people to gather signatures.  Now that the battle to force the bill to referendum has been won, money from outside the Once Free State is pouring in to buy pro-gay marriage TV ads and to pay for mailings.

The latest example is $250 per person fundraiser to held next month in New York.  Who are lending their names in the attempt?  Sarah Jessica Parker, Susan Sarandon and former first daughter Barbara Bush.  Maryland governor and 2016 presidential wannabe Martin O’Malley will speak. (Marty needs a head start on tapping those glitterati wallets).

In addition to Ms. Bush, former RNC chairman Ken Mehlman is helping out as well.  It seems that Republicans can have a “big tent”.  Who was the last prominent Dem to cross the aisle on an issue that challenged leftist orthodoxy?

Biden on Romney – “He’s Gonna Put Y’all Back in Chains”

DANVILLE, VA – Gaffes aplenty along the Dan River, thanks to Vice President Joe Biden.  First, Biden couldn’t figure out which state he was in.  Then, Biden decided to crawl right down into the gutter with the rest of the Obama campaign:

Telling a crowd that included hundreds of African-Americans that Mitt Romney was “…gonna put y’all back in chains” is chump change compared to some of lies being told by Barack Obama and his campaign surrogates.  Unfortunately, it is yet one more example of a ticket that will do anything, say anything, to remain in power.

In Ohio, presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney responded:

If Romney’s remarks seem a tad harsh, ask this question – What would be the response from the mainstream media if Romney leveled false charges against Obama similar to those being thrown, on a daily basis, by Obama and his campaign?

How Could You Possibly Question Climate Change?

That seems to be the question being asked with dismay by our friends at the Chestertown Spy.  Why are only 20% of Americans between the ages of 32 and 52 concerned about climate change?  Perhaps it’s because people over the age of 30 have acquired enough wisdom to understand that global climate has historically run in cycles and that every time we have a hot summer or a cold winter it isn’t because of a right-wing capitalist plot to destroy our environment?  Perhaps it’s because climate change advocates keep getting caught promoting “science” that defies common sense or that those same “scientists” seem more concerned with promoting an agenda than finding the truth?

Romney to Announce VP Pick in Norfolk

NORFOLK, VA – In a few minutes, on the deck of beside the USS Wisconsin, presumptive GOP nominee and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney will announce that Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) will be his pick to be the next Vice President of the United States.

Contrasting an Obama administration which is the first in history to fail to submit a budget, Ryan is the chairman of the House Budget Committee and the author of a plan to scale back the size of the federal government and reduce the country’s crippling national debt.

from Paul Ryan’s speech:
President Obama … “cares more about their next election than the next generation.”

“We look at one another’s success with pride … not resentment”.

“Our rights come from nature and God, NOT the government.”

“We promise equal opportunity, not equal outcomes”.

Country Singer Arrested for Driving While Intoxicated … and Naked

DALLAS – Country singer Randy Travis was arrested for driving while intoxicated (DWI) in Grayson County, approximately 60 miles north of Dallas.  In addition to being intoxicated, Travis was naked.  He was also charged with threatening highway patrol officers.

"Travis had a strong odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath and several signs of intoxication," according to a statement from the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office. "While Travis was being transported, Travis made threats to shoot and kill the troopers working the case."

Gay Group Wants “National Same-Sex Kiss Day” at Chick-Fil-A

LOS ANGELES – Not to be outdone by a bunch of bigoted rubes (I guess all of us patronizing Chick-Fil-A yesterday fall into that category), the gay advocacy group GLAAD has announced that Friday will be “National Same-Sex Kiss Day” at Chick-Fil-A.  According to the LA Times, “couples are encouraged to go one of the chicken restaurant’s locations and take a photo or video of themselves kissing”.

Don’t know about LA, but something tells me that this will be a HUGE hit here on Delmarva.

DON’T FORGET–Eat at Chick-Fil-A

Today is an opportunity.  With one simple act – patronizing your local Chick-Fil-A – you can stand up for free speech, the traditional American family, and your own individual liberty.  The same people that want to curtail your liberty are, by and large, the same individuals and groups who wish to dismantle the traditional family.

They wish to punish Christian and family-owned businesses like Chick-Fil-A.  By voting with your dollars today, you are saying no to the leftist bullies.

Show Your Support for Family, Liberty

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. Edmund Burke

Tomorrow you have an easy, simple method to show your support for liberty, justice, and the American family.  Simply go to Chick-Fil-A for breakfast, lunch, or dinner (or all three if you are able).  If you like chicken, you’ll enjoy a great meal.  If you are like me and aren’t a big chicken eater, get some waffle fries and a drink.  Regardless, eating at Chick-Fil-A tomorrow will show those that want to curtail free speech (at least speech that supports family values) and redefine the American family that there are still plenty of Americans who believe in simple things like God-given liberty and the traditional family.

Why the fuss?  Chick-Fil-A, the Cathy family (owners of the Chick-Fil-A brand), and its 1,600+ franchisees support horrible things like free enterprise, entrepreneurship, the traditional American family, and the right to operate under Biblically-based principles.  Ever wonder why Chick-Fil-A stores aren’t open on Sunday?

Because of their support of the traditional American family, those promoting anti-family values such as same-sex marriage are attacking Chick-Fil-A.  They have gone so far as to attempt to drive Chick-Fil-A franchisees from college campuses and left wing, anti-family politicians have even attempted to prevent Chick-Fil-A franchises from opening locations in their area.

Here is what Chick-Fil-A has to say:

“Voter Registration” Group Has Ties to Leftist Group

RICHMOND, VA – Four years ago Virginians saw ACORN and its affiliates deluge Virginia registrars with falsified voter registration forms.  Of course, it was an “honest mistake” made by a few “overzealous canvassers”.

Move forward to 2012.  Instead of ACORN, it’s the Voter Participation Center.  Who are they tied to?  According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, they are hooked up with, an organization slightly to the left of the Communist Party USA.

Mitt Romney is a bad guy because his campaign dares to ask questions about the registration of questionable voters.  AG Ken Cuccinelli is a bad man because his office dares to respond to a valid complaint filed by Romney for America.  You’re a bad person too if you actually believe that the voting process should be secure and only legitimate voters (you know – citizens, those not convicted of a felony, etc.) should be able to cast a ballot.

Welcome to Obama’s Amerika.

Why Is Freedom of the Press the Only Inviolate Freedom?

You often hear (or read) in the media that the First Amendment is inviolate.  Yet, media coverage of our most basic freedoms begs a question or two:

  • Why are the other enumerated freedoms listed in our Bill of Rights no less important than those in the First Amendment?
  • Are those “sacred” freedoms found in the First Amendment really inviolate, or does this only apply to “freedom of the press”?

In Sunday’s Daily Times we are told that we need to have a discussion about gun control.  Our liberal friends shouldn’t expect the Lower Shore’s paper of record to go much farther on this issue.  They would lose too many readers and advertiser if they actually endorsed gun control or overtly supported Attorney General Doug Gansler and his attack on law abiding citizens who wish to carry a handgun.  Leave more strident opposition to the Second Amendment to outlets such as the Baltimore Sun or the Washington Post.

While the Bill of Rights guarantees “freedom of the press”, it also guarantees a “right to keep and bear arms”.  The Daily Times asks why a requirement to register a gun is wrong when we have to register cars.  I wonder what their response would be if they had to have a permit for their printing press?  Should we be having a “discussion” about placing restrictions on a free press?

Of course, we won’t even bother discussing little annoyances like the Tenth Amendment.  I doubt the editorial boards of any of the above mentioned papers even know that one exists.

Even the First Amendment isn’t sacrosanct to most of today’s mainstream media.  They seem to forget that there are other parts to the amendment than freedom of the press.  As activist courts have changed “freedom OF religion” to “freedom FROM religion” we have heard little from the mainstream media other than applause.  Ironically, thanks in part to the media, secular humanism has become the established religion of our media AND our government.  I wonder if we should be having a “discussion” about that.

DC Back as Hot Bed of Corruption

WASHINGTON – After more than a decade of economic progress and a relative lack of scandal, the District of Columbia is back to “enjoying” a reputation as one of America’s most corrupt and financially mismanaged cities.  One city councilman is serving a three year prison sentence while another awaits sentencing after pleading guilty to federal charges of falsifying mortgage documents.  A campaign consultant to Mayor Vincent Gray has admitted that Gray was elected in 2010 with help of over $600,000 in illegal campaign contributions.  All three officials are Democrats.
