Congratulations Senator Mikulski

WASHINGTON – While we don’t agree with her views very often, you have to respect Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD).  Feisty and willing to fight for her state (for good or bad), Mikulski has served her constituents well.

On Saturday Mikulski became the longest serving woman in the history of the US Congress.  Already the longest serving woman in the Senate, Mikulski has broken the record previously held by former Rep. Edith Nourse Rogers (R-MA).

Congratulations!

Forum on Civil Discourse to Host Panel on Democrat and Republican Ideology

A GREAT IDEA THAT NEEDS A LITTLE MORE PASSION

SALISBURY, MD – The “Forum on Civil Discourse”, now under the umbrella of SU’s Institute for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement, will host a panel discussing Democrat and Republican party philosophy.  The event is scheduled for 7 PM, Tuesday, January 17th in Room 111 of Fulton Hall at Salisbury University.  The panel will be moderated by WSDL-FM’s Don Rush.  Representing the Democrat party will be Central Committee member and retired political science professor Harry Basehart.  Representing the GOP will be Central Committee chairman and SU mathematics professor Dave Parker.

Two separate groups have been hosting a series of debates over the past four to five months.  The “Forum on Civil Discourse” events are informative, but (with the exception of the first event) lack the type of give and take, along with audience participation, that might yield a civil, but interesting, discussion.  The group’s first debate was on campaign finance.  It was the participants that made the discussion interesting.  The inclusion of Parker in tomorrow’s forum is a plus.  He was key in preventing the discussion on education from becoming a total snooze fest.

The Wicomico Neighborhood Congress has also begun to sponsor a series of debates.  To date they have hosted two: the first on Wicomico County’s revenue cap and the second on whether or not Delmarva’s poultry industry can work with environmentalists.  Both were informative AND interesting.  While the discussions were civil, the were also lively.  Audience participation was also encouraged.

Civil does not have to mean boring.  While we encourage folks to turn out for tomorrow’s event, we hope that it will be more interesting than the previous outing by this group.

ACLU Sues West Virginia County Over “Jesus Fest”

CHARLESTON, WV – For the past five years, the Harrison County Commissioners provide $2,000 in funding for Clarksburg’s annual “Jesus Fest”.  That may end as the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is threatening a lawsuit against the county.  The ACLU argues that county funding of the festival violates the establishment clause of the First Amendment.

B.K. Vanhorn, an organizer for the event and immediate past president, argues:

Jesus Fest is really no different than any other summer festival held in Harrison County. The county commission also provides funds to the Italian Heritage Festival, which is held over Labor Day Weekend, and the Black Heritage Festival, which is held in early September.

"The bottom line is you don’t have to be Italian to enjoy the Italian Heritage Festival and you don’t have to be black to enjoy the Black Heritage Festival," Vanhorn said. "And you don’t have to be a Christian to come to Jesus Fest."

Sussex County Food Drive Needs Help

GEORGETOWN, DE – Sussex County staff kicked off their annual food drive six weeks before the 28th annual Caroling on the Circle event, scheduled for Monday, December 5th.  With just a few days to go, the floor of the container isn’t even covered.

In 2010, the county collected more than 20,000 food items.  The organizers are planning on collecting even more this year.  Residents are encouraged to “Pack the Pod” with canned goods and other food items.

“The need in our community is probably the greatest it has been than at any other time in recent memory, so that makes Caroling on The Circle that much more important this season,” Lawson said.

Wilmington Christmas Parade Moved to Saturday, November 26th

WILMINGTON, DE – The annual Wilmington Christmas Parade, usually held on Black Friday, will be held this year on Satuday.

"Moving the parade to Saturday offers the opportunity to use the ‘Small Business Saturday’ campaign as an additional incentive for downtown businesses to remain open before, during and after the parade and to use the marketing advantages built into the campaign," said Tina Betz, Wilmington’s director of cultural affairs and fund development. "The ‘Small Business Saturday’ campaign also attracted additional marketing partners to the table, such as the Small Business Administration.

"Additionally, holding the parade on Saturday meant we could include The Grand’s light show as a ‘grand’ finale to the afternoon activities."

Understanding Social Security

WILMINGTON, DE – DFM News is hosting a forum entitled Understanding Social Security this Friday, November 4th at Arsht Hall on the University of Delaware’s Wilmington campus. The event is open to the public and will be available via live webcast at DFM News.

This week, DFM News will be offering a variety of stories and commentary in preparation for Friday’s discussion. Today, an e-mail forum featuring panelists participating in the event:

With a struggling economy, rising cost of living, and a Senate super committee tasked with finding over $1 trillion spending cuts in the federal budget, Social Security has become an increasing topic for debate among many Americans. Political opinions on Social Security range from calls for measured changes to program to secure its solvency to claims that it is akin to a “Ponzi scheme” and will eventually collapse, making it likely that Social Security will among the top issues in the coming 2012 election cycle.

To help provide the public a better grasp of Social Security and the issues its faces, DFM News is hosting a forum entitled Understanding Social Security on Friday, November 4th. Prior to the forum, we asked some of expert panelists appearing at the event to answer one simple question: “Why should people care about Social Security?” Their responses, submitted via email, are below.
