The Great Democrat Hope

Attempting to keep the fiasco which is ObamaCare off of the nation’s front pages, Democrat politicos far and wide are focusing on “income inequality” and hiking the federal minimum wage.  There is just one problem … only 1.6 million Americans earn the minimum wage.  Of those, nearly 1/3 are teenagers.

How many millions lost their health insurance because of ObamaCare?

ObamaCare Hits Trader Joe’s

MONROVIA, CA – Everyone seems to love Trader Joe’s.  Since we don’t have one on Delmarva, my wife fills the car up every two weeks when she’s down in Virginia visiting her parents.  The grocery chain appears to be one of America’s many success stories … at least until ObamaCare reared its ugly head.  Last week the chain informed employees that Trader Joe’s would no longer be offering health care benefits to its part time employees.

What was supposed to be the answer to a supposed health care crisis, ObamaCare seems to be the opposite.  According to the Congressional Budget Office, over 7 million workers will lose their employer-based health coverage as a result of the law.  These individuals (and their covered family members) will be forced into government-run exchanges.

You Can’t Manage An Economy

WASHINGTON, DC – Big Labor, a leading backer of the Barack Obama administration and the Democrat party, is finally starting to learn that the government cannon manage an economy.  Their lesson?  ObamaCare’s 40% tax on “cadillac” health insurance plans.

Last week, just prior to the Labor Day holiday, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) announced that they would be ending their affiliation with the AFL-CIO over the union umbrella’s support of ObamaCare and the tax on “cadillac plans”.  Other labor unions are denouncing the law as they learn that their members will be adversely affected by ObamaCare.  The Democrat promise that all Americans could keep their existing plans if they wanted has rung hollow.

While more  employers across the country are cutting worker hours below the 30 hour “full time” threshold for ObamaCare, others are abandoning their traditional health plans in favor of high deductible Health Savings Account plans (HSA’s).  Ironically, it was the left that attacked these plans during the first decade of the 21st century.

HSA’s are cheaper, in part, because employees have greater control over their health care spending:

John Goodman, a longtime proponent, is sometimes called the father of health savings accounts. He explains that with such accounts "the employee controls a lot of the money, makes a lot of his own decisions."

He says that saves money because, as he puts it, "we’re always more careful when we’re spending our own money than when we’re spending someone else’s money."

Increased regulation and higher taxes distort the market for health care, which encompasses 17% of our nation’s economy.  Big Labor, and other traditional Democrat allies may finally be learning that Washington’s “Brain Trust” simply cannot manage such a large portion of the world’s largest economy.  Despite continual attack from government, the “invisible hand” of the free market always comes out on top.  Unfortunately, the distorting effects of government, labor unions, and corporatist business interests do impact the free market; yielding results that few proponents can anticipate.

Read My Lips … Repeal ObamaCare

Red State’s Erick Erickson is one of the few conservative commentators to actually understand what is happening in the Republican Party vis a vis Repealing / Defunding / ??? ObamaCare.  The party’s leadership has never cared about ObamaCare.  They wouldn’t support it, not because it is bad public policy, but because they knew it would cost them votes.  Remember, these same people had no problem supporting another massive entitlement – Medicare Part D.

A moderate, by definition, is one who believes in nothing.  Unfortunately the Mitch McConnell, John Boehner, Eric Cantor, et al are moderates.  The believe in nothing other than increasing their own political power.  We have symbolic votes to repeal ObamaCare because these people know that nothing will come of it.  They threaten to not increase the debt ceiling because they know it will have to be raised.  When they back down they tell us that the real fight will come at budget time.  Budget time has come.  There will be no budget and they now tell us that they have to pass a continuing resolution … without a defunding of ObamaCare.  The upcoming debt ceiling increase is where we need to tackle ObamaCare.  The GOP leadership not only doesn’t mind lying to us, they also believe that we are too stupid to remember what they told us less than a year before.

Erickson has hit the nail on the head.  The current intra-party fight over defunding ObamaCare is the “Read My Lips” moment for GOP moderates.  Perhaps the Boehner / Cantor / McConnell posse should make a pilgrimage to Houston and ask George H. W. Bush how it all worked out for him.  It made Bill Clinton president.

All of this doesn’t mean that conservatives should think that the battle is over and that we will regain control of the GOP.  It doesn’t.  Staying home will only give the Democrats a win.  We must work to ELECT conservatives.  Sadly, too many of us have become such ideologues that we will not support candidates unless we are in 100% agreement.  While moderates and conservatives all try to claim the mantle of Ronald Reagan, they refuse to follow the wisdom which he left us.

Obamacare … In One (Long) Sentence

Dr. Barbara Bellar is a candidate for the Illinois Senate.  She is also the author of the best definition of ObamaCare to date:

So, let me get this straight.  This is a long sentence.  We’re going to be gifted with a healthcare plan that we’re forced to purchase and fined if we don’t, which purportedly covers at least 10 million more people without adding a single doctor but provides for 16,000 new IRS agents, written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn’t understand it, passed by a Congress that didn’t read it but exempted themselves from it, and signed by a President who smokes — [laughter] — same sentence! — with funding administered by a Treasury chief who didn’t pay his taxes, for which we will be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect, by a government that has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, all to be overseen by a Surgeon General who is obese — [laughter] — and finally, financed by a country that’s broke.

Markell “Gun Shy” About Medicaid Expansion Under ObamaCare

DOVER, DE – Relying on the US Supreme Court’s recent ruling that the Federal government may not cut state Medicaid funding if states refuse to expand the program under ObamaCare, Delaware governor Jack Markell is refusing to commit to the expansion.

Currently, over 200,000 Delawareans qualify for free health care under Medicaid.  If Markell agrees to expand the program to 133% of the poverty level (as ObamaCare expects), the number of participants could increase by approximately 10%.

Mike Pretl’s Smooooth Rhetoric About ObamaCare and Its Costs to You

Saturday’s Daily Times had a great op-ed from Wicomico County’s favorite tree hugging statist – Mike Pretl.  I’m not being facetious; it is a great essay.  Pretl’s piece is a well written example of political propaganda at its best; persuasive but seriously lacking in the fact department.

Pretl tells us that only those who refuse to obtain coverage will have to pay “the tax”.  Untrue.  For starters, ObamaCare isn’t just ONE tax.  There are many taxes which we will be paying:

  1. Medical Device Manufacturing Tax
  2. High Medical Bills Tax
  3. A Reduction in the Limits on Flex Spending Accounts
  4. Surtax on Investment Income
  5. Medicare Payroll Tax Increase

It’s small wonder that the bill was written so that these taxes don’t take effect until AFTER the 2012 elections.

Pretl points out that there are many benefits to ObamaCare.  He’s correct.  There are many benefits.  Unfortunately, Pretl always fails to remember that there is no such thing as a free lunch.  The end result of ObamaCare will be to put us all into a single payer system – socialized medicine.  This is exactly what Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Martin O’Malley, AND Mike Pretl hope fore.  That’s fine.  They, like you and I, have a right to their opinion.  I just wish that they would all admit it.  To his credit, if you have a conversation with Mike about this issue he will admit that he wants a single payer system.  He just refuses to call it what it is – one more leap down the road to serfdom.

Obama Lies … You Are Deceived, Manipulated and Disrespected

In 2010, in order to get his healthcare bill passed, President Obama lied about and demonized doctors because the great majority of them opposed his healthcare bill.

Please review the document in this link.  This document is the actual web site posting by Trailblazer, a private company, which performs administrative functions for Medicare. This document simply shows the actual amount of the payment Medicare made to surgeons who performed foot or lower leg amputations back in 2010. The payment Medicare made to each surgeon for a foot or lower leg amputation was approximately $1000.

Now click the link below to watch our president give one of his crafty healthcare speeches in 2010:

Obama Lies About What Doctors Are Paid

Obama made the assertion that a surgeon was paid 30, 40 or 50 thousand dollars for amputation of a foot (lower leg)! However, you now know that the true figure is approximately $1,000. Clearly, Obama lied. The total cost of a lower leg amputation might be as high as 30 thousand dollars, but the great majority of the 30K or 40K or 50K goes to the hospital, not the surgeon.

Catholic Bishops Call for Civil Disobedience on ObamaCare

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has issued a statement calling for civil disobedience regarding key provisions of ObamaCare.  In Our First, Most Cherished Liberty the Bishops call on all Catholics, “in solidarity with our fellow citizens”, to refuse to obey this “unjust law”.  The Bishops state:

“It cannot be obeyed and therefore one does not seek relief from it, but rather its repeal.”

They also state that they are willing to go to prison rather than obey an immoral law.

  • The right to own and operate your own small business
  • The power to decide what is medically best for our families and businesses

Supreme Court to Begin Hearing ObamaCare Case Today

WASHINGTON – When the U.S. Supreme Court begins to hear the challenge to ObamaCare today, don’t be disappointed by a lack of argument attacking the constitutionality of the law itself.  That’s not what today’s session is about.  Today the nation’s highest court will hear arguments as to whether they should even consider suits brought against the act.  Why?  The key provisions which are being challenged haven’t gone into effect yet.

Taxes Up, Jobless Benefits Down Jan. 1

MEDICARE REIMBURSEMENTS TO DOCTORS WILL DROP AS WELL

WASHINGTON – The Senate has gone home for Christmas and the House has refused a two month extension of the payroll tax cut and an extension of unemployment benefits.  The net result is that, barring the Senate coming back to D.C. early, workers will see an slight decrease in their paychecks come January and untold unemployed will see their jobless benefits stop after the first of the year.

FOXNews reports that President Barack Obama will attempt to use the bully pulpit to force House Republicans to reverse their 229 – 193 vote killing a Senate compromise bill:

"Now let’s be clear," Obama said at the White House. "The bipartisan compromise that was reached on Saturday is the only viable way to prevent a tax hike on Jan. 1. The only one."

While some House members seem to relish an election year battle with the White House, many were not around during past budget stalemates with a sitting President.

In addition to an increase in payroll taxes and a reduction in jobless benefits, physicians will see a reduction in their Medicare reimbursement rates.  Beneficiaries could see an immediate result in doctors refusing to take on NEW Medicare patients.  Whether physicians will be forced to ending their relationships with existing Medicare patients in the near term is unknown.

Delmarva Physician Loses Ability to Prescribe Opiates, Narcotics

SALISBURY, MD – A Salisbury doctor has been suspended from prescribing certain types of drugs by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.  Dr. Brent Fox, a pain management physician, has lost his ability to prescribe opiates and narcotics, including Vicodin and Oxycodone.  His patients will no longer be able to fill or refill prescriptions for these types of drugs.

Fox’s privileges were suspended after an audit revealed that he “failed to conform to the professional standards of care mandated for doctors who practice pain management medicine, and that his actions put the public in danger.”

A hearing is scheduled for December 12th, where his registration to write such prescriptions will likely be revoked.

DC Appeals Court Upholds “ObamaCare”

WASHINGTON – As the US Supreme Court prepares to consider whether to hear challenges to the Obama health care plan, the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia yesterday upheld the constitutionality of “ObamaCare”.  By a 2 – 1 vote, a three member panel of the court ruled that mandated insurance coverage was not unconstitutional:

"Broad regulation is an inherent feature of Congress’s constitutional authority in this area; to regulate complex, nationwide economic problems is to necessarily deal in generalities," wrote Judge Laurence Silberman, who has a reputation as one of the court’s most conservative judges.

"Congress reasonably determined that as a class, the uninsured create market failures," Silberman said. "Thus, the lack of harm attributable to any particular uninsured individual, like their lack of overt participation in a market, is of no consequence."
